Featured Artist | Jodi Walsh

In 1967, Jodi left her home country of Canada to explore Europe, the Middle East, and the Far East. The colorful and textured landscapes of Taiwan and Bangladesh, as well as the intricate patterns intertwined in the histories of African and European countries, became a part of her very being. Jodi’s talent as an artist is innate, and she is entirely self-taught. Her unique style, inspired by nature, is brought to life through her use of “Oritatami Nendo: folding clay” – a technique that produces stunning and original pieces of art. Jodi's creations resonate with all cultures and styles, reflecting her deep connection to the environment and the natural world.

Sunday Selects | Natural Aesthetic Vibes

Sunday Selects is a weekly review of the art, artists and culture curated by gallery director and founder Kim Fonder. By providing a connection to newly discovered art and objects as well as sharing enjoyed rituals, Exhibit hopes to expand enjoyment of the creative approach in your everyday life. We find this approach similar to the concept of wabi sabi, a Japanese term referring to the appreciation of the beauty of imperfection, impermanence, and simplicity as the natural state of things in the world. This week, we feature 3 artists Holly Addi, Jeri Eisenberg and Mark Jackson.

Featured Artist | Cydney Parkes

In addition to her use of raw materials and neutral colors, Cydney Parkes' art also incorporates elements of nature. She often uses materials such as wood, stone, and natural fibers to create a connection between her art and the natural world. Her focus on wabi-sabi, the Japanese aesthetic of finding beauty in imperfection, is evident in the intentional use of cracks and uneven textures in her pieces. By embracing imperfection and incorporating the natural world into her art, Cydney creates pieces that feel organic and coexist harmoniously with their surroundings.

Featured Artist | Carlos Gamez de Francisco

Carlos Gamez de Francisco's art has been heavily influenced by his Cuban roots and classical training. His passion for art developed at a very young age, and he dedicated himself to painting for eight hours a day by the time he was fifteen.

Despite his classical training, Carlos Gamez de Francisco felt that everyone should have the opportunity to be in a portrait. He embarked on a series where everyday people were featured with 'found' objects in their home, such as lace doilies, curtains, plastic bags, and kitchen towels, draped and adorned in such a way that they appeared 'royal'. This approach to portraiture is a testament to his belief that everyone deserves to be represented in art, not just the wealthy and the privileged.

Featured Artist | Brandon Reese

Brandon Reese's unique approach to ceramic art has gained him recognition in the art world. His focus on experimentation and use of varying techniques is rooted in his belief that the process of creation is just as important as the end result. Reese's art truly embodies this philosophy, with his pieces showcasing the marks and textures of their creation process, giving each piece a unique character and story.

Reese primarily works with stoneware and porcelain, but his most recent works incorporate reclaimed native wood and salt glazed stoneware. These materials add an organic element to his work, emphasizing his connection to the natural world.

One of the most distinctive aspects of Reese's work is his ability to create familiar forms in unconventional ways, often at large scales that push the boundaries of ceramic art. This contrast between the familiar and the unconventional creates a sense of intrigue and wonder in the viewer, encouraging them to explore the piece more closely.

Featured Artist | Jessica Feldheim

Jessica Feldheim's passion for visual arts and dedication to education has led her to create inspiring works that are both beautiful and meaningful. Her latest works, "Contemporary Illuminations," draw inspiration from her study of the Kabbalah, a discipline that emphasizes bringing light into the world. Through the use of her breath, light, and intention, Jessica creates pieces that not only keep the spirit alive but also bring it into the world.

One of the most striking aspects of her work is the use of gilding with pure gold and silver leaf, which transforms her simple brush and ink drawings into pieces of "spiritual calligraphy." Her studio, located in an old factory building in Western Massachusetts, provides the perfect space for her to continue her creative journey. With her talent and dedication, it's no wonder that Jessica Feldheim's work has made a lasting impact on the art world.

Japandi Style

Japandi art has been gaining popularity in recent years due to its unique and harmonious blend of two distinct design styles. One of the key features of Japandi art is its emphasis on simplicity and functionality while still maintaining a warm and inviting atmosphere. This is achieved through the use of natural materials like wood and stone, which are often left in their raw and untreated state to highlight their natural beauty. Neutral tones like beige, grey, and white are also commonly used in Japandi design to create a calming and serene environment.
