Recycled Glass Bubble Terrarium Large
These pieces are made with at least 50% recycled glass, which is typified by impurities such as bubbles, dimples, flow and grit marks and rippling.
Using methods almost unchanged since the middle of the first century B.C., skilled glassworkers gather molten glass on the end of a blowpipe and inflate it into a large bubble. To create the unique shape of each terrarium, the bubble is flattened and curved into shape using specialized metal tools rather than molds.
Once shaping is complete, workers slide the hot pieces into an annealing furnace where the glass is slowly cooled. During this phase, the terrariums come into contact with one another as well as with the furnace floor. Some characteristic surface scratching and pitting can be expected. Once the glass is cool, the rim is beveled and polished.
