Queen Catherine

Catherine, clearheaded, ambitious, intelligent, was a direct contrast to her neurotic husband. She used her charm,  intelligence and extraordinary energy to assist her when she came to power. Her reign was one of overcoming the great difficulties she experienced at court, and under her power Russia was revitalized, being recognized as one of the great powers of Europe. In this painting, her regal bearing represents her ascendancy to the throne, also leaving behind the subservient position of the young bride, cushions symbolizing her beginnings, the slipper reminiscent of the domesticity that she surpassed to become a powerful leader.
