URSULA O'FARRELL

O'Farrell has focused her painting almost entirely on the depiction of women, reflecting no doubt a concern about her own identity. These canvases are done by an artist who has absorbed the lessons of Action Painting and are done with a vigorous brush, probably also with a palette knife and a trowel with lush paint slathered on to the support.

JAMIE KIRKLAND

Jamie Kirkland seeks to evoke a sense of limitless space, of expansiveness, stillness and calm in her paintings. Her work has been described as "minimalist abstract landscape." Kirkland desires to speak to the viewer through simplicity and by reducing the landscape to shapes and forms, much the same way a poet expresses an idea in three lines of haiku.

MARINATED SUMMER SQUASH WITH HAZELNUTS AND RICOTTA

Toss raw halved squash with salt and let it sit for at least ten minutes (and up to 30) to draw out some liquid, and then pat dry with paper towels. This also seasons it from the inside out, concentrating the flavor.

GIN ROCKET

Portland- and San Francisco–based bartender Kate Bolton has the touch for subtle, delicate drinks that go wonderfully with food. This spin on the gimlet is no exception: shaking shaved fennel and muddled arugula into the drink gives it an anise-and-pepper flavor that's ideal for serving with seafood or light pasta dishes.
