Magic Eight Ball 1

In this pairing, the Santos figure represents the positive and negative fortunes predicted by a nostalgic childhood toy, the crazy eight ball. The black plastic is now gold, the ‘Eight’ is now in Latin, as are the phrases.

The paintings have a humorous take on the fortunes the toy reveals, so positive pronouncements, her wig intact, her crown with all its jewels in place, are in Series I.

The negative predictions are in Series II. Her wig has fallen apart, the jewels in the crown falling out around her and the phrases in Latin are the ones we dreaded receiving.

The figures are floating, adding to the surrealism of the painting.

(The Santos figure is in the artist’s collection of 18th century Italian art)
